2013年5月13日，FOX电视台正式宣布，《24小时》的新故事将以迷你剧形式将在2014年回归，名称正式确定为《24小时：再活一天》。在《24小时》宣告完结之后，电视剧主创和主演基弗·萨瑟兰一直在尝试着去拍摄《24小时》的电影版，不过计划一直未被落实。此次，萨瑟兰将在续作中继续饰演“不死特工”杰克·鲍尔，不过剧集的长度将从之前的24集缩短为12集。

本剧讲述六十年代的舞女（吴天瑜），歌女（戴倩云）和一个妈姐（王淑君）发生在南苑（吉隆坡中华游艺场，现在的金河广场）中，奋斗的故事和爱情故事，还有在六十年代的封建时代，舞女，歌女和妈姐都能结义金兰成为三姐妹故事。
本剧以吉川英治的《宫本武藏》做为原作，原作原本只写到岩流岛决斗而已，而本剧则是在后半部份衍生出岩流岛以后的故事。在岩流岛决斗的那一集，用了三十台摄影机，尝试制作出特殊的效果。，又请来颜尼欧・莫利克奈作音乐，喧腾一时，极有话题性。但是开演之后，收视率每况愈下，到后来可说欲振乏力。包括女主角米仓凉子等演员与编剧镰田敏夫等人，将整出戏包装得像是偶像剧一般，而这也正是前一出大河剧“利家与松”被批评诟病的部份所在。 本剧在播出期间也制造出一些负面的新闻：在第一集里的强盗袭击场面被认为有抄袭黑泽明导演的电影“七武士”之嫌，因此在全剧播毕之后，由黑泽制作公司提出著作权遭侵害的告诉，不过黑泽公司败诉。其次是剧中角色吉野太夫脱衣向宫本武藏献身，这一幕遭到部分艺文界人士抗议，认为身为文化人的吉野太夫不该被演成如此不堪的女性。此外在演员的方面，男主角市川新之助被爆出与一名女歌手有私生女的丑闻，并且又和女主角米仓凉子因戏结缘相恋，也着实热闹了一阵子。
