本剧改编自Sarah Perry的同名小说，讲述刚丧偶的Cora Seaborne（Claire Danes 饰），从伦敦搬去了埃塞克斯郡，调查关于一条神秘之蛇的传闻。Cora与村里的牧师Will Ransome（Tom Hiddleston 饰）建立起了意料之外的纽带，但当悲剧来临时，当地人指控她吸引了这种神秘生物。
