汉朝，淮南王刘安因对上古神话传说感兴趣，被武帝（刘威 饰）使为“离骚赋”，奉旨著书。为收集素材与妻子寻月遍访民间，历经世事，眼见因武帝营宫室、急赋敛、重刑诛而导致盗贼群起、民不聊生，著书锐兴顿减，又因寻月积劳成疾病倒途旅，遂返京上万言谏疏。武帝怒而欲杀之，幸得群臣力保，才于重杖之后 限令三日著成《淮南子》。及至回到家中，方知爱妻已撒手人寰，痛不欲生中挥泪提笔，奋笔二日成书两卷，当写到第五十四篇—后羿嫦娥故事时，因思念亡妻而难以成文，力竭朦寐之中，寻月竟来到眼前，一面替夫磨墨，一面对夫侃侃道出未尽的故事：后羿（李铭顺 饰）如何受天帝之命，斩巨蟒、除八害以救苍生，如何在鸷鸟伤害嫦娥时射鸷鸟以救嫦娥（范文芳 饰）。还说她之所以死后再来相会，只为再次为人再结夫妻缘。说完凌空飞升而去。惊醒的刘安唯见皓月当空，月宫中竟隐现着妻子的身影，于是义思汹涌一夜疾书，青丝尽成白发，终为后人留下后羿射日、嫦娥奔月等旷世神话。
